Why Wear Contact Lenses?

Like traditional lenses, contacts can help correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Unlike traditional lenses, though, contacts rest on your eye surface, allowing you more opportunities to enjoy clear vision without worrying about storing, cleaning, and protecting your eyeglasses.

Specialty contacts can also help address various eye conditions, including some that may affect your child.

What to Expect from the Exam & Fitting

Contact lens exams and fittings help us determine your lens prescription, measure your eye’s dimensions, and see if you’re a candidate for contact lenses.

We may prescribe you contact lenses or recommend an alternative strategy depending on our findings. In some cases, traditional eyeglasses may still be the most appropriate strategy for addressing certain eye care needs.

The Eye Exam

During the eye exam, we’ll take a detailed look at your eye health and determine if you have any eye concerns that may affect your candidacy for contact lenses. Some of these issues can include:

Overly dry eyes
Frequent eye infections
Allergies
Dry or dusty environments

We may recommend a specialty contact lens to help address these concerns.

The Contact Lens Fitting

We’ll take several measurements during the contact lens fitting to ensure your contacts fit comfortably. These will include measurements of your:

Cornea
Eye’s shape & size
Tear film

We can measure your eyes in a number of ways, but one technology we may use is a corneal topographer. This device analyzes your eye’s surface and helps us look for conditions that may affect your fitting, like keratoconus.

Our Specialty Lenses

The most common contact lens types we prescribe include rigid gas-permeable or soft contact lenses.

However, we may recommend a specialty contact lens if you have a specific eye concern. Specialty contact lenses are designed to address a range of conditions like dry eye, presbyopia, keratoconus, and more while also correcting your vision and keeping your eyes comfortable.

If we detect these issues during your eye exam, we may prescribe you a specialty pair of contacts.

Multifocal Contacts

Multifocal contact lenses are designed with multiple prescriptions to help address presbyopia-related vision problems.

Presbyopia makes it difficult to focus on near objects as you age, but having another prescription in your lens can help keep your vision clear at all distances.

Toric Contacts

Astigmatism is an issue that can affect your vision quality at near and far distances. It is generally caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, but toric lenses are specifically designed to address this issue and correct your vision.

Scleral Contacts

Scleral contacts are larger than traditional contacts, which allows them to rest on the sclera, or whites, of your eyes.

This larger size makes it so the center of the lens “vaults” over your cornea while also correcting your vision. We may prescribe scleral lenses if you have keratoconus or if you struggle with dry eye symptoms.

Ortho-K Contacts

Orthokeratology contacts, also known as Ortho-K contacts, are specifically used to help manage myopia (nearsightedness) progression in children.

These lenses are worn at night while your child sleeps. During this time, the lens slowly reshapes your child’s cornea to correct their vision. They can remove the lenses in the morning and enjoy clear vision without needing contacts or eyeglasses.
